X Introduces Country-of-Origin Labels to Combat Misinformation
Elon Musk's social media platform X, formerly Twitter, has rolled out a new feature displaying country-of-origin labels on user profiles. The update aims to enhance transparency by revealing account creation details, verification status, and geographical data. Users can access this information by clicking on the join date in a profile's bio.
X's head of product, Nikita Bier, emphasized the feature's role in content verification. "When you read content on X, you should be able to verify its authenticity," Bier stated. The platform is testing the labels with team members before a broader release.
Analysts suggest the MOVE could disrupt fake accounts and AI bots engaged in misinformation campaigns or foreign interference. The feature arrives as social media platforms face increasing scrutiny over content moderation and geopolitical manipulation.
